Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a field that applies the findings of the basic sciences to improving human lives. Whether it’s developing new agricultural techniques to increase crop outputs or creating new pharmaceuticals, biotech has as its goal the alleviation of pain and suffering. Since the early 1970s, with the discovery of recombinant DNA technology, the field has expanded dramatically. Biotechnology has since benefited greatly from regular advances in molecular genetics. As one of the most prominent molecular biology institutions in the world, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has maintained intimate links with the biotech industry, and the work of its scientists has informed emerging technologies for several decades.
