Genome Research - Mechanics of the HGP

Mechanics of the HGP

The Human Genome Project, officially begun in 1990, was the largest collaborative project ever undertaken in biology. The estimated plan for completing it would cost $ 3 billion dollars and last 15 years. The public portion of the project was run in the most collaborative fashion of any large scientific project in history, since all data collected was immediately disclosed on the internet for all other researchers to use. The mechanics developed to run the Human Genome Project may very well affect the future of science as much as the information the project sought to discover.
