Dick loves teaching that course [Protein Purification and Characterization] at Cold Spring Harbor. Part of it is because he loves purifying proteins, so he gets to teach a course on purifying proteins to people who are just eager, eager, eager to learn everything they can about purifying proteins.
I think another reason he likes it is that he doesn’t get into the lab anymore and this is his chance. He spends two weeks, sixteen hours a day working in the lab and he’s worked it out. He tells me a lot about what he does. He’s worked it out. There are four groups of students who come in and do this module, so he repeats the thing four times. But he always does it different those four times. He’s always figured out something he wants to test out and some kind of experiment he wants to do while they’re teaching the course. So it’s continually new to him.
The other thing is that he loves the students. He’s always telling me, “Oh, this year we have the most fabulous group of students.” Then he tells me that they’re from all over the world and he loves hearing what they’re working on because, of course, it’s extremely diverse. They come—typically they’re people who haven’t been trained in purifying proteins and they’re geneticists or they’re somebody who is studying ecology or they’re somebody who’s doing all these diverse things who has gotten to a point in their research where they need to do something with a protein. They come here and get up to speed really quick and very intensively. He loves learning about what they’re doing and meeting them. He’s great to interact with over things like this.
Ann Burgess is the Director Emeritus of the Biology Core Curriculum. She earned her B.S. in chemistry from UW-Madison and her Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard University. She was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1987 to 2002.
Biology Core Curriculum is four semester intercollege honors program that provides a broad and integrated background for students interested in any field of biological science. She is interested in undergraduate science education with a particular accent on laboratory and filed experiences that absorb students in process of science.
Ann Burgess is running in several UW-Madison and national efforts to advance science education, including the BioQUEST Consortium and the National Institute of Science Education's College Level One team.
