Completed in 1971, the south side addition became known as the James Laboratory Annex. With this project, Jack Richards started his career at CSHL as the in-house contractor, leaving his imprint on this and many other renovations to come. Designed by Harold Edelman, the Annex exterior featured vertical board sheathing, continuing the design of the first renovation. It was a two-story addition housing much-needed offices for the senior scientists and a Director’s office suite and seminar/library room, all with views of Cold Spring Harbor. Another small addition was built on the west (front) side of James in 1973 to house the first laboratories specifically designed for research on animal viruses.
