In the planning and design of the concrete building, special attention was given to safety and the control of temperature, vibration, and noise. James Laboratory was among the first year-round facilities at the Bio Lab. It housed an x-ray room, dark room, cold room, chemical and general research labs, machine shop, glass blower’s room, filing room, and study. Among other specialized x-ray equipment was an “apparatus for measuring x-rays in the new international r-unit.” Hugo Fricke conducted experiments on the effect of x-rays on living cells. The above photo is of Dr. Fricke’s laboratory showing a Wheatstone Bridge used for measuring electric conductivity and capacity of biological materials.
