The Mather (now Davenport) House stands 21/2 stories high. According to Elizabeth Watson's Houses for Science the interior was fashioned "similar to that of the typical pre-Civil War Long Island farmhouse.the finishing details of the residence were in up-to-the minute late Nineteenth century High Victorian style". There were tower-like projections flanking the house and decorative trim accenting the exterior.
