The Mather (now Davenport) House stands 2 1/2 stories high. According to Elizabeth Watson's Houses for Science, the interior was fashioned "similar to that of the typical pre-Civil War Long Island farmhouse. The finishing details of the residence were in up-to-the-minute late nineteenth century High Victorian style." There were tower-like projections flanking the house and decorative trim accenting the exterior.
