Although the new additions more than doubled the size of Blackford Hall, consideration was given to maintaining the classic design of the building. It was important that “the old Blackford” continue to be recognizable to those who had attended meetings and courses at the Lab in its earlier years. The expansion was completed in two years and a rededication celebration was held on March 2, 1993. The former assembly room was dedicated to Efraim Racker, an Austrian scientist and artist who isolated ATP synthase. He spent summers at CSHL working on enzymology and making drawings of his fellow researchers.
