Blackford Hall was built in 1907 without a heating system since the courses taking place during the early years of the Bio Lab were held only during the summer months. The Lab was sometimes lovingly referred to as “a summer camp for biologists.” However, by 1973, the need for year-round housing and dining on the Laboratory grounds was growing. To better utilize Blackford Hall, as well as the other buildings along Bungtown Road, heating systems were installed. As a result of the winterization of Blackford Hall, made visible by the bright blue radiators, all staff members could obtain meals on campus throughout the year. The bedrooms on the second floor were now available during the off-season for visiting scientists and speakers.
