On August 23, 1979, the Alfred D. Hershey building was formally dedicated to the recently retired CSHL scientist. In attendance were his long-time close friends, Max Delbrück and Salvador Luria, along with a large number of friends and admirers. His reputation was such that in the dedication booklet created for the event, the program of speakers was titled: "In praise of Dr. Alfred D. Hershey." The speakers were (in the seating order from left above) James D. Watson, Franklin W. Stahl, James D. Ebert, Alfred D. Hershey, Max Delbrück and Salvador Luria.
