To create the new building, Centerbrook Architects and Planners dismantled the greenhouses and built five broad, single-story wings modeled after them in shape, virtually on the same foundations. The two-story potting shed was preserved and incorporated into the new space. Completed in 1979, the Alfred D. Hershey Building provided conference facilities and offices for staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and administrative support, and housed core services such as graphic arts, photography, electrical, mechanical, and instrumental repair shops, the health and safety office, and the shipping and receiving department.
