Since 2009, Greg Hannon and his 48 member lab have occupied all of McClintock Laboratory concentrating their research on small RNA biology, cancer biology, and mammalian genomics. Dr. Hannon’s early work at CSHL led to the identification of CDK inhibitors and their links to cancer. His work on small RNA biology also led to an understanding of the mechanisms and functions of RNAi. Throughout its history, there has been a culture of collaboration among the scientists in McClintock Laboratory and CSHL. Dr. Hannon continues that tradition with his collaborations with scientists at CSHL and other institutions. Notably, he is a member of one of the research teams (led by CSHL Professor Tom Gingeras) in the international consortium ENCODE, funded by the NHGRI. The consortium has published groundbreaking research results identifying the great extent, previously unknown, to which the human genome can be transcribed into RNA.
