From its earliest days, in addition to studying mammalian behavior, reproduction, and inheritance, pioneering scientists in Animal House researched the genetic basis of cancer. Newly hired scientists established laboratories in 1914, and other rooms were set aside for visiting scientists, equipment, surgery, and colonies of small animals. The picture above, facing east, shows a back view of Animal House with free-standing aviaries to the right. On the far right is the Main Building, now Carnegie Library, the first laboratory built by the Carnegie Institution at Cold Spring Harbor.
