In November of 1980, construction began on the Reginald G. Harris Building to be used to house small animals, cancer research, and ultimately, genetic engineering of the mouse. The building was named to honor the far-sighted director of the Long Island Biological Research Laboratories, Reginald G. Harris (1924-1936). He was the initiator of CSHL's Annual Symposium, a fundraiser extraordinaire, and a promoter of the relationship between biology and other basic sciences.
