In 2019, the Samuel Freeman Building housed the Churchland, the Koulakov, and the Engel laboratories.

In 2014, Assistant Professor Anne Churchland was named a Pew Scholar, received a Fellowship from the Simons Foundation, was named the Esther A. and Joseph Klingenstein Fellow, and was promoted to Associate Professor. Her lab investigated the neural machinery underlying decision-making.

Professor Koulakov and his colleagues are currently trying to determine the mathematical rules by which the brain assembles itself, focusing on sensory circuits involved in visual perception and olfaction.
