Barbara McClintock and Alfred Hershey, both already working at the Department of Genetics and eventual Nobel Prize recipients, were the first scientists to move into the new Demerec Laboratory. On the day of the opening ceremonies, they, along with other scientists of both research institutions, opened their labs and held demonstrations of some of their current research for the visitors attending the celebration.
