Many prominent scientists have occupied the walls of Hooper. Ernst Mayr, an ornithologist who summered at the Lab from 1943-1952, often lived in Hooper during his stay. Nobel Prize winner Barbara McClintock, who researched jumping genes (transposable elements) during the 40s and 50s at CSHL, also lived in Hooper in the 1980s. On the morning she was awarded the Nobel Prize, journalists flocked to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, hoping to speak with Dr. McClintock. Since Barbara had no phone in her house, the Lab's employees and scientists had to bang on the door to Hooper to wake her up.
