At first, mice were needed to create monoclonal antibodies, then to assist in work on viral oncogenes, and then to make antibodies against cellular proteins. Hence, the small animal dwelling was christened the "Mouse House."

In 1982, the Mouse House became available due to the completion of the Harris building (animal facility,) and was promptly converted into the offices and small laboratory to be used by McKay and Hockfield.
