Over the years, visitor housing at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has taken many shapes, sizes, and comfort levels. Some of the buildings date to the mid-nineteenth century, while others are a few years old. In the 1930’s and 40’s it was summer housing only. The tents preceded the cabins, and the hardships of residing in a tent are recounted in the "Tenters’ Anthem." By 1986, there were fewer than 150 beds available on grounds, but the newly completed Grace Auditorium was drawing crowds of 200-400 participants. In 1989, additional housing accommodations for meeting attendees were realized in the completion of six new guest cottages.
