Although the animals and breeding cages left the Main Building in 1911, laboratory research continued to be done there. Milislav Demerec came to America from Yugoslavia in 1919, and shortly after he arrived, he began working in the Department of Genetics at the Station for Experimental Evolution at Cold Spring Harbor. His Laboratory was located in the Main Building. Demerec researched the genetics of maize and later the genetics of Drosophila. From 1941-1960, Demerec became director of both the Station for Experimental Evolution and the Biological Laboratory.
