The former J.W.T Nichols CSH estate, known as Uplands Farm, had been deeded to the Long Island Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. In 1984, the Laboratory made a leasing agreement with the Nature Conservancy to purchase 12 acres. This transaction was finalized with the purchase in May of 1988. The Uplands Farm agricultural field station consists of a seed laboratory, planting fields, a research greenhouse, two residences, and fertile fields for growing maize.
