Nichols was designed by Henry H. Saylor and completed in 1928 as both an administrative and research facility. According to the 1928 Bio Lab annual report, Nichols originally had seven research laboratories, an animal room, an operating room, a staff room, and the Director’s office, with two secretary offices. In addition, there was an aquarium running fresh and salt water, as well as gas and electricity in each workroom.
