By the late 1920s, Biology Lab Director Reginald Harris envisioned a year-round facility that would not only stop the waste of the Lab equipment from going unused during the winter months but would also take advantage of the abundance of local marine material and lower the cost of living. With this in mind, the Nichols Building was designed to accommodate the research and administrative needs of a year-round facility. Mr. and Mrs. Acosta Nichols donated $20,000 in memory of their son, George Lane Nichols. Mr. Nichols was the nephew of Franklin Hooper, one of the founders of the Bio Lab.
