The Laboratory's old Power House (center of photo) was built on the inner harbor waterfront in 1913 to facilitate the heating of all the Carnegie Institution structures. Nearby, another structure stood known as the Carpentry Shed (small white structure seen on left in photo). Past Director, Dr. Watson, and past Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Jack Richards, lamented the old and cramped conditions of the Carpentry Shed. These two structures were converted into the David and Fanny Luke Building.
