There came a necessary, yet temporary, pause in the peaceful history of the Laboratory. Director Demerec cleared James biophysics laboratory and Urey and Cole Cottages for the 20 to 30 scientists, engineers, and guards from Airborne Instruments Laboratory of the Division of War Research. It was later revealed by the director of AIL that Cold Spring Harbor’s electrically quiet location was perfect for research and testing of anti-submarine devices.
