Director Harris, fueled by his interest in biophysics, called for the first Symposium held in 1934 to be on Surface Phenomena.

A small group of scientists stayed for approximately one month at the laboratory carrying out research. Housing for these visiting scientists included Cole Cottage.

This first Symposium fulfilled a vital function, evidenced by the Rockefeller Foundation award of $5000 toward the second.
