First Public Presentation of Double Helix Structure, 1953

The lecture hall was formally opened by Vannevar Bush on May 29, 1953, in time to host the Symposium on Viruses attended by famous early molecular geneticists. Of note in attendance was the 25-year-old James Watson, who gave his first public presentation on the discovery of the double helix structure of the DNA molecule. He co-authored this paper with researcher Francis Crick (1916-2004).
