Renovation

A much-needed renovation of Airslie was undertaken to the designs of Charles W. Moore of the architectural firm known now as "Centerbrook." Dr. James D. Watson and his wife, Elizabeth, discovered this firm and fueled the commission.

In the Annual Report of 1974, Dr. Watson stated, "Of particular importance... the complete renovation of 'Airslie' our lovely, ancient, almost manorlike home... over the past three decades... condition steadily deteriorated... and thanks to the combination of a superb architect and very competent craftsman, our Lab now possesses a home which will bring it many compliments."

Most of the changes occurred inside the home, but the new windows and broad porch added to the improvements viewable by the scientists and guests at the yearly Symposium picnics and softball games. A dramatic and inviting three-story entrance hall was topped off with hidden lighting.
