Biological Laboratory – Challenging Times, 1930s

Although, in 1931, outside financial support came in from the Carnegie Corporation and the Rockefeller Foundation, thereby showing approval of the work of the Laboratory and support of the Association, the grants were not for the purpose of maintenance at the Laboratory.

The 1931 Annual Report of The Biological Laboratory contains the following observation, "The number of biologists to whom the Laboratory can thus be of service has now reached a relatively constant figure at forty, fixed by present laboratory facilities and living accommodations."

The following year, 1932, a steady focus was established for the Laboratory in further sponsoring research in modern, fundamental, quantitative biology. Accordingly, additional, suitable laboratory rooms to house a small outstanding group of summer researchers had to be the focus.

Then, in 1933, the Women’s Auxiliary arranged a donation of furniture and money for the improvement of living quarters. Improvements in the arrangement, decoration, and furnishing of small "apartments" (the old cabins?) occurred.
