eBooks and Image Trials through the Holidays [12-7-2011]
Closed Published by Yow-Ning Chang December 7th, 2011 in AlertsFor this eReader-battlefield of a holiday season, the CSHL Library has set up two trials for you to test your new toys on, the eBook trial is with World Scientific. Some of CSHL scientists have published with this publisher. World Scientific presents a diverse array of titles spanning 16 subject areas. Two subject areas are most relevant to our users:
- Life Sciences (including Biocomputing; genome informatics)
- Medicine and Healthcare
Searching with the word “brain” generates 1278 matches. Each one is an individual book with table of contents. Users have the option of reading online or printing out in PDF format of one chapter at a time. Access is through IP recognition at World Scientific eBooks. [Link updated 12/15/2011]
is from BioMed Central. It is an online collection of images, movies, illustrations and animations across biology and biomedicine. BioMed Central is committed to providing immediate open access to peer-reviewed biomedical research. If you happen to have a color eReader, please do not hesitate to check this out.
Both trials only lasts until January 13th, 2012. Science Librarians would appreciate any feedback regarding these resource platforms and usability comparing to other providers.

Closed Published by Tom Adams September 28th, 2011 in Alerts, General
We have just added a new journal trial for your review.
Cancer Discovery provides a unique forum for paradigm-changing, broad- interest original research, reviews, Research Watch journal summaries, and insightful perspectives in addition to rapid, noteworthy, cancer-specific news. Currently, these types of features appear in disparate publications. This journal is the first source scientists will go to for critical information in cancer science and medicine — in a compact format.

NIH Common Fund Research Topics for 2013
Closed Published by Yow-Ning Chang August 30th, 2011 in General, UncategorizedNIH is Inviting Comments on the NIH Common Fund Research Topics for 2013
What is the NIH Common Fund?
The NIH Common Fund supports exceptionally innovative programs that are inherently high-risk but have the potential for high-payoff by catalyzing research across NIH and in the biomedical research community. The Common Fund currently supports 26 different programs. New ideas for Common Fund programs are identified annually or as funds are available.
How can I participate?
NIH is asking the research community to help shape initiatives that could be funded by the Common Fund. NIH has developed a website where you can comment on the areas that have already been proposed: http://commonfund.nih.gov/strategicplanning/. Some of the ideas are very broad and need to be refined, while others may need to be expanded or redefined to address the criteria for Common Fund programs. Note that this is not a voting process nor is it a solicitation for new topics. This is an opportunity to give informatics research problems greater visibility at NIH, independently and as components of other areas. NIH hopes you will participate in this interactive dialog over the course of the next few weeks. They expect to close the site in mid-September and compile the comments for review by NIH Leadership. Ideas that emerge from this process as having the highest potential for broad impact will be discussed with the Institute Directors in October, for new programs to be launched in FY13.
Are any of the proposed topics related to informatics?
NLM submitted a topic for consideration that is called Meeting the Challenge of Big Data in Biomedical and Translational Science. Other informatics specific topics include Cross-Cutting Issues in Computation and Informatics and Innovative Mobile and Wireless Technologies (mHealth) to Improve Health Research and Health Outcomes. Informatics is an important consideration for many other of the other topics as well.
Go to the Common Fund Strategic planning page to learn how you can participate in this process.

Family-Science Career Balance & Breaking through the Spiral Ceiling [August 2nd, 2011]
Closed Published by Yow-Ning Chang August 2nd, 2011 in Alerts, GeneralYou are invited to join us for a talk in the Szybalski Room,
Carnegie Building, on
Thursday, August 11th, at 4 p.m.
“Family-Science Career Balance & Breaking through the Spiral Ceiling”
Presented by Dr. Laura Hoopes
Hosted by CSHL Library & Archives
Laura L. Mays Hoopes entered the field of molecular biology after completing her PhD at Yale back in 1968. Before and after that point, she encountered resistance to women in science, but persisted in her desire to study how DNA is expressed and regulated. Her current research is on the molecular aging of yeast cells. Hoopes is the Halstead-Bent Professor of Biology and Molecular Biology at Pomona College, the founding member of the Claremont Colleges just east of Los Angeles, CA. She moderates Nature’s blog on Women in Science on the Scitable web site and writes often for Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Magazine.
Laura is in phased retirement, is winding down her biology research, and preparing for a second career in creative writing. She is working on an MFA at San Diego State University and is writing a novel and a double biography of Joan Steitz and Jennifer Doudna. She is passionate about providing as many role models as possible for women considering a career in science, particularly ones that emphasize not giving up on family aspirations. Come to hear about how her life unfolded and her insights into how to keep life balanced for women who enter the realm of science.
Two Online Resource Trials: Science Classic and Annual Reviews [July-6-2011]
Closed Published by Yow-Ning Chang July 6th, 2011 in Databases, Journals, Trial Complimentary Trial to Science Classic
This Institutional site-wide trial includes the digital archive content of Science from 1880 to 1996. The Trial will run from 7/8/2011 through 9/30/2011. Presently without the trial, we have access to the same material through JSTOR. The difference between JSTOR back-files and AAAS back-files is that the latter are fully integrated into the Science website, fully indexed and thus searchable within AAAS, as well as in Google.
Annual Reviews Biomedical/Life Sciences Collections Trial
This Trial of Annual Reviews covers the 2007-2011 Biomedical/Life Sciences Collection of 25 journals. It will End on 8/31/2011. The CSHL Library currently subscribe to 13 of the 25 titles. Annual Reviews is a non-profit publisher of prestigious topical review journals. Each journal has its own editorial board of experts who choose both the topics and the appropriate authors for articles. Advanced search is available within the Annual Reviews Website.
Please contact the Science Librarian (ext. 6994) if you have any question or comments.
