Max Delbrück (left), who was German, and Salvador Luria (right), an Italian, are considered the core of the phage group, along with Alfred Hershey. The seaside campus of Cold Spring Harbor provided opportunities for summer relaxation as well as work. Delbrück, Luria, and Hershey were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1969.
