Osterhout Cottage was referred to as "the cottage" or the "Fagan Cottage" until 1933 when it was named after W.J.V. Osterhout, a Bio Lab secretary and the general director of the Brooklyn Institute during the 1920s and 1930s. A letter from the director of the lab at the time, Reginald Harris, to W.J.V. Osterhout acknowledges that the building will be named after him.
